About Hawaiʻi Alliance for Progressive Action (H.A.P.A.)

The Hawaiʻi Alliance for Progressive Action (H.A.P.A.) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is "to catalyze community empowerment and systemic change towards valuing ʻaina (environment) and people ahead of corporate profit."   H.A.P.A. is committed to revitalizing and supporting grassroots democracy.

H.A.P.A. is a statewide movement conceived on Kaua‘i and born from the experience of the community's effort to assert its values and guide its future.

H.A.P.A. believes that we are at a particularly critical point in time, with both corporate influence over politics as well as citizen discontent and engagement at all-time highs. H.A.P.A. believes we must act now to preserve and leverage recent successes for democracy, social justice and long-term sustainability.

H.A.P.A.'s 3 main focus areas are:

  • Revitalize and support grassroots democracy through action and advocacy ("Take Back Government")
  • Community and environment over corporate agendas ("People over Profits")
  • Local solutions to global challenges ("Think Global, Act Local")
H.A.P.A. advocates for issues and policy that directly impact the state of Hawaiʻi but also have national and international implications. H.A.P.A. uses Hawaiʻi issues and policy changes to set an example for communities everywhere who face similar challenges resulting from the growing paradigm of corporate colonialism and the negative impacts on people and the planet.

H.A.P.A. is an action oriented organization.

H.A.P.A. maintains coalitions and partnerships locally and with friends around the globe.

H.A.P.A. has a diverse and strong Board of Directors whose composition and core values reflect the diversity of the State, value and respect for native Hawaiian history, culture and values, and a commitment to advocacy for people and the environment.

H.A.P.A. is funded via grants from public interest trusts, foundations and individuals from around the world.
